PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project is about the installation of fabric in a small space. By exploring the rituals that happened daily in our life, our central concept is focused on physical refreshment, and evoking a sense of calmness. The installation connects the body to soft materiality and pulls the user towards the breeze, sunshine and nature.
Walking meditation and face-washing are the ritual that we focused on. The first is inspired by the motion of walking in a circle by pilgrims at the Kaaba. The second, face-washing, was interpreted abstractly. Face washing in the every day sense is cleaning the face with water. However, we thought wind could also wash our face, which gives an abstract sense of refreshment and purification.
Our design is closely connected to both our concepts. Walking is often attached to a destination. We used a procession of fabric strategies to add interest to the process of getting to the final destination. The fabric are arranged more densely and vertically at the beginning. As a spectator walks deeper into the installation, they are met with gradually more porous fabric manipulations.
We have selected our site next to the window because it met with soft breezes and luscious green views. The viewer is refreshed by the wind and nature. The procession comes to an end with a netting strategy using muted natural colors. We wanted to evoke a journey of simplification, both in terms of color and consumed amount of the fabric. This multitude of gradient, from length, density, porousness and color, reflects our central concepts of meditation and purification.
We hope that this journey to a refreshing breeze and relaxing view can serve as a in-between class break. As Pratt students we are faced with stress and large workloads daily. This dynamic and calming installment can be a spot for short meditations.
